Description

A superb pair of late 19th-century bronze sculptures depicting the celebrated Marly Horses, after the famous models by the renowned French sculptor Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746). Beautifully cast, each sculpture portrays a powerful rearing horse restrained by a youthful groom, capturing the extraordinary movement, drama and anatomical precision that made Coustou’s original works among the most admired equestrian sculptures of the French Baroque period.
Each figure stands upon a naturalistically modelled rocky base with stylised foliage and retains a rich, deep bronze patina that has mellowed attractively with age. One base bears an impressed foundry mark. The quality of the casting is evident throughout, from the expressive facial features and flowing manes to the finely modelled musculature of both the horses and their attendants.
