A superb late 19th century oak artist’s studio easel by the renowned makers Winsor & Newton, retaining the original brass trade plaque inscribed “Winsor & Newton Improved Studio Easel”. Exceptionally well constructed in solid quarter sawn oak with rich colour and beautifully figured grain throughout, the easel was designed for professional studio use and survives as a remarkably complete example with its original fittings and mechanisms intact.
The substantial central easel frame is fully adjustable in both height and angle, operated by the original geared winding mechanism with cast brass crank handle stamped “Improved Studio Easel – Winsor & Newton London”. The rack-and-pinion style action allows the canvas support to rise and lower smoothly, while the tilting upper section enables the easel to accommodate works of varying scale and working positions. The broad adjustable ledge provides excellent support for large canvases, with the rear supported by elegant blackened iron strengthening braces.
Standing on a heavy trestle base with original lignum vitae castors, the easel was intended to be easily manoeuvred around the artist’s studio despite its impressive scale and weight. Brass carrying handles are mounted to each side, alongside original iron and brass fittings throughout, all complementing the warm patinated oak surface developed through decades of practical use.
