A very decorative pair of late 19th Century kingwood and tulipwood open bookcases in the Louis XVI taste, having wonderfully figured veneers throughout with finely cast gilt bronze mounts and Sevres porcelain plaques to the frieze.
The tops with broad crossbanded surfaces above richly cast ormolu mouldings and an attractive frieze centred with circular porcelain panels flanked by shaped rectangular plaques, all hand painted with romantic scenes on a turquoise blue ground with delicate gilded decoration. The uprights mounted with elegant ormolu drops and further gilt bronze ornament, standing on shaped plinth bases with additional ormolu mounts and decorative central clasps.
Each bookcase retains three adjustable shelves providing ample storage and display space, with the interiors finished in a contrasting dark polish which enhances the warmth and colour of the veneers. The quality of the veneering and crisp casting throughout is particularly good.
