Description

A fine quality early 20th century brass cased barograph by Short & Mason of London, housed within its original glazed display case and raised on a stepped ebonised plinth base. The instrument features a polished brass mechanism with a traditional stack of vacuum capsules operating a finely balanced recording arm, tracing atmospheric pressure changes onto the rotating chart drum.
The drum retains its removable brass top and period chart paper, while the mechanism is engraved “Short & Mason London” together with serial numbering to the brass platform. The instrument is protected by a substantial bevelled glass case with brass framing, allowing full visibility of the beautifully engineered movement from all sides.
Originally used for recording and monitoring barometric pressure, this is both a functional scientific instrument and an exceptionally decorative desk or library piece.
