An elegant and unusual set of four graduated nest of tables, finished in the chinoiserie taste and decorated throughout with richly detailed Oriental scenes. The black lacquered surfaces are highlighted with gilt and polychrome decoration depicting figures, pagodas, boats, exotic birds and floral motifs, all executed in a traditional hand-painted manner.
The tables stand on slender tapering supports with shaped feet and finely decorated stretchers, giving the set a refined and delicate appearance. The graduated design allows the tables to slide neatly beneath one another, making them both practical and decorative.
Particularly attractive is the consistency of decoration across all four tops, each scene differing slightly and adding individuality to the set. The aged gilded borders and gentle wear to the edges only enhance their character and authenticity.
