A superb set of eight Portuguese walnut dining chairs dating from the late 19th century, comprising six side chairs and a pair of matching armchairs. Rich in character and craftsmanship, the chairs are beautifully constructed and retain their original embossed leather backs and seats, decorated with bold scrolling foliate designs set against a finely textured ground.
The shaped high backs are bordered with large brass studwork, a feature continued around the seats, giving the set a distinctive and traditional appearance. The armchairs are fitted with elegant scroll arms supported by turned baluster uprights, while all the chairs stand on finely turned barley twist front legs united by attractive block and bobbin stretchers, providing excellent strength and stability.
The walnut frames have developed a lovely deep colour and warm patina over time, complementing the richly embossed leather.
